A group of seven accused members of German far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
