Pentagon Report Finds Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing secret information in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in question contained particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Troops

The internal investigation found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he shared, though it was not specified whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or compromised the operation. He added that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be made public later this week.
